Album Review: Barenaked Ladies- Grinning Streak

Since 1988, Barenaked Ladies has had a way of creating music that is both sentimental and comical. With Billboard hits like “One Week” and “Pinch Me,” they have fun when producing music. Their 13th studio album, Grinning Streak , is filled with tracks that don’t seem to try too hard to compete with their famous hits. Most of the tracks are fairly short and have a relaxed ambience with each track having a different theme.

“Limits” starts out with an electronic rock intro which becomes combined with a jazzy piano background which eventually moves into the foreground. It’s the perfect evolution of the rock sound that Barenaked Ladies has built a 25 year career out of.

“Did I Say That Out Loud?” is a really cute love song about loving who you love and not caring what other people may think. What girl doesn’t dream of a guy saying “Anywhere you’re going be that’s where I want to be…Is it such a mystery how I fell for you”…swoon.

In “Daydreamin’,” it actually sounds like you’re listening in on someone’s thoughts while they are daydreaming. The high pitched repetitive melody brings to mind an image of floating in clouds and blue sky. The vocals are also altered to sound more electronic and dreamlike. This track is different from the rest in that it felt surreal in comparison to the other songs.

This album seemed like the result of four guys jamming casually after years of working together.  There were no complicated instrumentations, heavy electronics, or rap that they have done in the past. The Barenaked Ladies have a sound that is now mature and established in their pop-rock genre.
