May Music Discovery: The Devyl Nellys

For the month of May, you’re getting all new music all the time! Stay tuned all month for artist recommendations you might not already know about!

There’s no better band than the Devyl Nellys to put you in that New York state of mind. Hailing from the shadows of the New York skyline, the band has taken over the bar scene from Greenwich Village down to Cape May, and with one album under their belt, they just released their new album, Too Much Information, this past April. Their sound is a mix of alternative gypsy funk and eclectic pop, and with new, danceable tunes featuring layers of percussion, the Devyl Nellys are guaranteed to make you want to play the tambourine and wear a neon scarf.

The band is named after its frontwoman, Nelly Levon, whose sultry vocals are complimented by the smooth riffs of her bass player, Ben. Launching the Nellys into the foray of rock are the solos of guitarist Christian and beat master Jake. With a band-wide hairstyle straight out of the 70’s, this talented group will gyrate straight off the stage and into your brain for the rest of the week.

The new album, Too Much Information, highlights the band’s vibe-driven approach to music. Launching with the classic Clav sound, the song “More Excuses” bridges the gap between triple-A and alternative rock, and the first single, “Hot Hurricane” is reminiscent of Ike & Tina Turner and Otis Redding.

The Devyl Nellys feel like the soundtrack of The Big Apple at its most vibrant moments, and yet they provide elements of European grooves with songs like “Attracted”. So if you’re looking for a funky summer filled with fun songs and a great vibe, pick up your tambourine and get your fill of the Devyl Nellys!
