Why Aren’t You Listening to: Seth Walker

“Why Aren’t You Listening to” is an irregularly-running series at Rock on Philly, spotlighting artists in Philly and beyond that you should be keeping an eye (and ear) out for! The latest installment in the series focuses on soulful New Orleans roots musician Seth Walker.

Why you should be listening: With the recent release of his video for “All That I’m Askin'”, off of most recent album Sky Still Blue, Seth Walker definitively demonstrates his musical depth, effortless cool, and even his dancing chops. Fans of Walker’s already know him for the bluesy, soulful, folk-tinged songs in his repertoire; Sky Still Blue brings an extra-gritty groove to his previously-gentle sound, like a lion who’s found his roar.

Sounds like: The gravel of a dark path under your feet and the heavy, resonant clunk of a handle of whiskey in your hand,  as you make your way to a midnight bonfire in the middle of the woods.

Listen to: “All That I’m Askin'”, if only for the Fosse-esque cool of the video. But also for the funky groove that ties in so well with the rest of Sky Still Blue, which you should definitely listen to–it’s a golden album, from the easy strut of “Easy Come, Easy Go” to the rattlesnake growl of “Trouble (Don’t Want No)”.
