Recap of Songwriters in the Round: Billy Joel Edition!

Last Thursday night, the Rock On Philly family came together to celebrate the birthday of the one and only Billy Joel.  The featured singer-songwriters Ashton John, Jen Pague of Vita and the WoolfDominic Tursi, Laura Cheadle, and Rock On Philly’s own Jennifer Logue each put on stellar performance after stellar performance, singing into the intimate crowd like nothing else mattered in the world.

Ashton John opened the show with focused dedication and heartfelt power that was felt throughout the venue.  His rendition of Billy Joel’s “Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)” blended in with the rest of his set seamlessly, showing the bare flesh of his heart on stage.

Jennifer Logue followed up with a beautiful, soulful set that included a fun and cheeky rendition of Joel’s “Why Should I Worry.”  Her original song, “Jeans” keeps getting better with each reincarnation, accompanied by the stylings of Will Winborne, Jr  on keyboards and Rob Tait on cajon.

Dominic Tursi followed up with an unbelievably awesome tribute to Joel with “Vienna“.  His voice and stage presence convey the maturity of a seasoned singer-songwriter and the impassioned essence one craves in a performer.

Jen Pague‘s performance was truly a standout of the night.  Her huge, booming voice filled the tiny space with mesmerizing sound, even when she stumbled over the lyrics to “Piano Man.”  There is no doubt her voice will carry her far in her career trajectory.

Laura Cheadle, last but certainly not least, followed up with an energetic and enjoyable performance.  Her catchy, blues tunes turned the last bit from sheer awe to just fun as she joked and clearly was having fun with the audience. Her rendition of “She’s Got A Way” was both fun and extremely well-done, the exact essence of Joel we were looking for!
