Today is National Guacamole Day, so naturally, it’s a good day to talk about the new album from a phenomenal kindie band who wowed the crowd at Musikfest mere weeks ago, Rolie Polie Guacamole.

Before we go any further, let’s start with a definition.

Kindie is a genre of kids music that, simply put, combines the words “kids” and “indie”. Kindie notable include Laurie Berkner, Koo Koo Kangaroo, and, of course, They Might Be Giants. Kindie is basically what you get when a generation of DIY rockers wants to do what Raffi did, but better.

RPG is a Brooklyn based kindie act that is heralded as the one of the top acts in the genre, as well as being called the NYC area’s best kids’ act. They combine Latin, salsa, pop, country, folk, rock, and funk to create a unique sound that kids love and parents can happily enjoy as well.

As a parent, I know the pain of finding music for children that doesn’t make me want to jump out the window or, at least, plug my ears. With the recent kindie wave, there are several gems that are not only tolerable, but really enjoyable. RPG is one of these gems.

Their upcoming release Chips & Salsa releases on September 25th, but has already garnished much praise from critics. Perhaps the very toughest critic, my six year-old son Cash Hendrix, has been known to request this album on almost a daily basis for going on a month now. In fact, for the last two weeks, it has been the sole CD in his boombox for playtime and bedtime alike.

“My favorite is the Rolie Polie Guacamole song,” Cash said gleefully when asked which track he loves most. He followed this answer up by singing the song and dancing around his room. This particular song is a Latin-flavored theme song of sorts that opens up the album. It is strong and sets the tone for an album that delivers back to back fun and poppy tunes that are nearly impossible to keep out of your head once heard.

You can check out the entire album for free on the band’s website through the 20th and below is a video for their first single… and it’s a tune that you probably know…

And, in honor of National Guacamole Day, once you check out RPG, you can make a batch of their incredible guacamole recipe. No Jack White tantrums here!
