The average Philadelphia resident likely doesn’t realize a) how much musical history the city truly possesses and b) the immense talent that it fosters. No one understands this dilemma for performers than the team at Jazz It Up Philly. It all began when Thomas Camarda approached two partners, Charlie Bartlett and Tony Kauffman (who had started their management company KBM Productions), with a grand idea. In the year since then, Jazz It Up Philly has become one of the biggest music residencies in the city. Each month, Jazz It Up Philly hosts a live jazz show featuring three live jazz bands from the Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware area at the prominent center city restaurant, Volvér. I had a chance to sit down with co-founder Charlie Barlett to discuss how he connects with these musicians, organizes these events, and the key to Jazz It Up Philly’s success.
