Jay Z Premieres “Picasso Baby”

Last night, Jay- Z premiered his short film for “Picasso Baby” on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. Directed by music video veteran, Mark Romanek and filmed at Manhattan’s Pace Gallery, Jay Z’s performance of “Picasso Baby” becomes an engaging performance art installation. The film shows the rapper turned mogul including everyone in on the action, from celebrities like Judd Apatow, Alan Cumming, Wale, Jemima Kirke, Fab Five Freddy, and Rosie Perez, to a number of incredibly lucky audience members. Special homage was also given to famed performance artist, Marina Abramovic, who appeared in the film with Jay- Z no less than 13 times! Of the experience, she says-“ “It was great, it was so much energy. It was hot!”

When I initially heard about “Picasso Baby,” I wasn’t sure what to expect, but after experiencing it for myself, I can’t help but comment on how feel- good it is. It’s a celebration of art- beyond the labels and the genres- that focuses on art’s core purpose, to connect the artist with his/her audience. We spend so much time romanticizing the past that we sometimes fail to notice what’s right in front of us- the art within the scripts of our favorite films and TV shows; the art of the latest designs sweeping the runways at Fashion Week; and even the art of the Jay Z’s lyrics and hip- hop as a whole. It all paints a picture and has the power to bring people together. “Picasso Baby” is definitely worth checking out. If you notice something else that’s worth discussing in the film, mention it in the comments below!  Half the fun with art is talking about it, right?
