Rock On Philly’s Happy Songs Playlist 2013

There’s oatmeal in your coffee filter, dog crap in your day-old wedges, and your hair refuses to resemble anything but a bar’s clean-up rag. Don’t even bother checking your commute because the Schuylkill is in apocalyptic disarray, as it is every a.m. This is your morning. You haven’t even left your house yet and you’re already envisioning that moment of mental surrendering. That moment you’re pathetically crouched in the corner, hypnotically swaying to and fro, reciting the lines from “Bohemian Rhapsody”…I’m sure this sounds all too familiar.

It’s ok, you’re just having a moment, and sometimes all you need is a little musical medicine to chase the blues away. Here’s a list of some of my favorite happy tunes.

OK, let’s get the most obvious choice out of the way. I mean, he is literally telling you that every little thing is gonna be alright. And, really, who’s more insightful than a toking Rastifarian? – Bob Marley “Three Little Birds”

Yes, I am quite biased here. I mean, it’s the freakin’ Beatles – The Beatles “Here Comes the Sun”

As a spawn of the 80s and growing up in the 90s, I couldn’t help but have – and continue to have – an obsession with mermaids. And Lady Madge, herself. That’s why I have to give the list this perfect combo that brings sand-rolling joy – Madonna “Cherish”

I can’t control it, you jolly bunch. I’m already dancing in my seat to this one – Paul Simon “You Can Call Me Al”

If you don’t show your pearly whites thinking of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (whether you’re male or female), you might as well just stop reading now, I can’t cure your state of sadness. The mere thought of him dancing to this gem after he, well, you know, makes my heart sing with the cartoon birds like I just got done…well, you know. And, not to mention, Daryl Hall is a Philly boy – Hall & Oates “Make My Dreams Come True”

It’s either those far-reaching vocals or that infamous stomp and clap that gets me moving with this little number. It’s rare to come across a current popular song that doesn’t warrant a gang-style beating on my car radio – Fun. “Some Nights”

Despite his, uh, allegations, this man oozes legendary. If there were ever an actual, reigning King of Pop music, it would be MJ. For life. Again, male or female, try not to put on your best stilettos and pony trot all over your room – Michael Jackson “The Way You Make Me Feel”

Does this even need an explanation? My email is available on this site if you don’t understand the placement of this song in a playlist of happy songs – Lily Allen “Smile”

Though it’s the eternal argument on personal stance of the Susquehanna Bank Center, I can’t think of a more content moment than lounging back on my beach blanket in the lawn, eyes closed, hearing every single lick of that guitar. Sans the drunk teenagers – Jack Johnson “Banana Pancakes”

It may be a song named after a place across the pond but it could easily be used as a musical sketch of your “happy place.” Did anyone else sway without even knowing it? – Peter Gabriel “Solsbury Hill”

I can’t remember the last time I was giddy falling under attack of flying underwear and airborne beer. Oh, yes I can. They needed a spot in here because their shows are just synonymous with the best effing time you will ever have – Barenaked Ladies “If I Had a Million Dollars”

Think about the last time you were in a packed Old City bar late on a Saturday night. No matter how many times times you hear it, is there ever a person not exuberantly belting out every lyric to this song? Nah! – Journey “Don’t Stop Believin’”

Go on with ya bad self, Steve Perry impersonator. It just goes to show you, no matter how played out that song is, you’re still singing your tone-deaf, little heart out. It still brings you joy. Right? This little compilation is sure to get a smile out of even the biggest grumpy gills of the world, so put on that smile and Hakuna Matata, my friends.
