Philly is one of Andrew WK’s Favorite Cities

The self- proclaimed “King of Partying,” Andrew WK, is coming to Philly’s TLA this Sunday, October 6th to perform with Marky Ramone and his band, Blitzkrieg. Rock On Philly had the chance to talk with Andrew about the tour, his new book, upcoming album, his favorite spot for a Philly Cheesesteak, and why Philly is one of his favorite cities.

ROP: Andrew, thank you so much for taking the time to talk with us tonight! First off, let’s talk about this tour with Marky Ramone and Blitzkrieg. How did that come about?
AWK: It is really cool and I’m really grateful for the opportunity. A friend of mine, Steve Lewis, who is like, the King of Nighttime in New York City, thought of me and I auditioned for the gig and got it. The first show was at Santos Party House and then we went to Europe. In total, we’ve been on tour together for about 2 months since April.

ROP:  What can the fans expect from the show? Do you have any favorite songs in the set?
AWK: I’m singing lead vocals for a 35- song Ramones set. The whole thing is so intense and demanding, it turns into one song! The whole set is my favorite part. There’s not one song I’d want to take out at this point. It’s like a relay race; each song hands itself off to the next song.

ROP:  Very cool! I’m sure Philadelphia is going to love it. Speaking of the City of Brotherly Love, have you performed here a lot in your career so far? I know you live in New York City so it’s super close.
AWK: I love Philly! It’s one of my favorite cities in the entire world. I’ve performed here 8 or 9 times. I love the TLA as a venue, too. This show in particular is super exciting, even more exciting than NYC, because we’ve never taken this show to Philly before.

ROP: So what’s your favorite thing about Philly?
AWK: I have to say, I have a tradition when I come here and that is getting my Cheesesteak at Jim’s. I’ve tried Geno’s, Pat’s, and Tony Lukes but Jim’s is special. Its proximity to the TLA is perfect and I love going before soundcheck. I get my double meat and double cheese, a little salt and pepper.  Then after the show, I usually go back for a second one. I’m a huge Jim’s fan. I even wear my Jim’s T- Shirt quite a bit.

ROP: Double meat and double cheese. That’s hardcore! But back to the subject of music, do you have any plans to record a new album soon?
AWK: I’m glad you asked! I’ve been working on a new album for a while but these awesome opportunities come up and I post- pone it. Hopefully we’ll get the album done in the winter months and release something in 2014.

ROP: You also recently inked a book deal with Simon & Schuster. What’s your book about?
AWK: Yes! It’s called “The Party Bible” and it’s all about life in general through the lens of partying.

ROP: Interesting. What would be your top 3 Party Tips?
AWK: Ha! 1. Eat a Philly Cheesesteak. 2. Don’t forget to use the bathroom. You don’t want to get a distended bladder. (ouch!) 3. Keep Partying!

ROP: With this next question, I couldn’t resist getting a little political. What are your thoughts on the government shutdown?
AWK: Maybe the partying tips could be applied to diplomacy. Nothing kills a party like shutting it down. It is what it is. I just feel really bad for the people whose jobs have been affected.

ROP: So as you may or may not know, we feature a lot of up and coming Philly musicians on our site. Do you have any advice for them being in the early stages of their careers?
AWK: Trust your instinct. Do what you feel you are supposed to do. Never compromise. You only get once chance.

ROP: That’s fantastic advice. Thank you so much for chatting with us and looking forward to the show Sunday!
AWK: My pleasure, Jennifer. See you there!
