Playlist Monday: Lose Yourself to Dance

In honor of the Philadelphia Festival DanceSport Competition approaching this year, we have compiled this week’s Playlist Monday with an eclectic range of songs for you to enjoy. We’ve included video clips both old and new, and possibly too much to digest in one sitting, so feel free to skip ahead. The competition is being held at the Downtown Sheraton in Society Hill on April 11-13th. More information can be found here.

The first clip is from a recent movie that put Philly and Philadelphia sports in the spotlight and the connection to the competition is an obvious one; Silver Linings Playbook.

1. Silver Linings Playbook- Final Dance Scene

This next video exhibits my favorite dance scene in a movie and expanded my appreciation for Jamiroquai.

2. Napolean Dynamite- Dance and Reverse

Here is an unofficial video for Daft Punk’s song Lose Yourself to Dance that is all too fitting. If you pay close attention to the montage (at 2:05) you’ll catch Jean-Claude Van Damme kickin’ it in 1984 classic “Breakin'” I believe. Tons of good stuff here:

3. Daft Punk- “Lose Yourself to Dance”

I know this one is old news by a couple weeks but how could I not include the best dancing to hit the screen this year so far AND with Letterman’s retirement announcement, this Future Islands performance is worth another look.

4. Future Islands- “Seasons (Waiting on You)”

I was fortunate enough to make it down to SXSW this year, and St. Paul and the Broken Bones were hands down the best live act I caught. They fit into the dance theme as I challenge you to see, these guys dance to their deep-south soul sound.

5. St. Paul and the Broken Bones- “Call Me”

I couldn’t make a playlist about dancing without mentioning Dirty Dancing. However, in lieu of a Dirty Dancing clip, mainly because we’ve all seen it countless times, I will use this clip from the underrated Crazy, Stupid, Love.

6. Crazy Stupid Love- The Big Move

There is no better overlap of Philadelphia and dancing than Kevin Bacon. Here’s a clip of Bacon’s appearance on The Tonight Show a couple weeks back and his Footloose entrance on the show.

7. Kevin Bacon’s Footloose Entrance

Here’s a more recent favorite of mine from the now defunct band LCD Soundsystem called Dance Yrself Clean, and a highly entertaining unofficial video with help from the Muppets!

8. Dance Yrself Clean/LCD Soundsystem- Muppets Rock Out!

The opening scene of  foreign film, Intouchables, showcases possibly the best dance song ever, in my humble opinion; Earth, Wind, and Fire’s “September”. Enjoy.

9. Intouchables- Opening Scene

I will end things here with one more expertly-crafted montage in tribute to dancing entitled, “Let’s Dance”, featuring The Killers’ “All These Things That I’ve Done”.
