Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party Series Changes Course

It seems that Radio 104.5’s Summer Block Party concert on May 3rd got a little out of hand. With Phantogram and Chvrches playing a free show at the Piazza in Northern Liberties, the venue was apparently short on public toilets and the crowd wandered into neighbors’ yards to relieve themselves. Between raucous day drinking, public urination, and other crude public acts, NoLibs residents had had enough and took action.

As of May 9th, the Piazza has terminated its agreement with Radio 104.5 for the continuation of the Summer Block Party series. Matt Rueben, president of the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association, voiced his concerns:

“It’s not in anyone’s interest for the Piazza to be known as a place where out-of-control events happen. It hosts a lot of great events that bring people in from all over the region without any incident. But Radio 104.5’s events seem increasingly out of hand, based on previous events, and I’m glad they’re not continuing.”

Radio 104.5 is still determining the locations for the rest of the shows — between Grouplove, Neon Trees, and The Head and the Heart, there’s no way to cancel — but the next show on June 7th (The Head and the Heart, Bear Hands, and Kongos) will be hosted at Festival Pier, at Columbus and Spring Garden. Let’s just hope the crowd keeps things clean this time.
