Rock On Philly’s Your Perfect Weekend

Summer is growing closer everyday and the weekends are becoming packed with great activities. It feels like every time you check the Internet there’s something new opening up. But who’s complaining? This weekend is the premier of some of Philly’s iconic summer pastimes and all you have to do is get out there and enjoy.

Friday-

Yesterday marked the opening day for the back patio bar and restaurant at Morgan’s Pier. Covered in arranged flowers and just beneath the Ben Franklin Bridge, this outdoor deck is as enormous as it is picturesque. What better way to enjoy the Friday evening than drinking in the perfect environment with friends?

Jazz/funk/electronic band Dopapod will be joined by Jimkata and New Sound Brass Band tonight at the TLA . The 4-piece improvisational Boston natives will crush any preconceived notions of genre that you may have had, delving into a range of sounds and blended them together intricately. Doors open at 7pm.

Another memorable summer event is returning today. The 104.5 monthly block party returns to the Piazza at Schmidt’s with music beginning at 3:45pm. With availability of beer, food and music you will not want to miss out. Most importantly, be sure to make it to Phantogram’s set starting a little after 6pm.

In honor of the Allman Brothers Band and the departure of guitar greats Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, this evening is set aside for Highway 41, an Allman Brothers cover band. At 9 o’clock this soulful 7-piece from New Jersey will take the stage at World Cafe Live. From personal experience, Highway 41 has a great sound and will get you moving to the beats of the legendary southern rockers.

A short drive north this morning will lead you to Chestnut Hill and their Home and Garden Festival. Even if you don’t come to enjoy the selection of plants, homemade furniture, or organic products, you also have the food, live music and games to entertain you.

If you head back to the city by three, you should be just in time to catch Acoustic Sunday at the Legendary Dobbs. Edward Neenan will satisfy your softer musical side while you relax with a drink and listen to a mix of original and cover songs.
