A Chat with Honeyblood

Scottish duo Honeyblood, will be performing at Milkboy Philadelphia on July 29th. Their exciting self-titled album Honeyblood hit the stores on July 15th. The album is equal parts beachy and urban rock. The rocking ladies, Stina and Shona, effortlessly deliver grungy fierceness, which can be heard on “Choker” and “All Dragged Up.” They can also slow it down and let Stina’s vocals really shine on tracks like “Braid Burn Valley.” The music video for “Super Rat” just came out and it’s cute and colorful. Philadelphia is in for a treat as Honeyblood stops in as a part of their album tour.

To get Philly acquainted and ready for the show, Rock On Philly chatted with Honeyblood about their new album and their tour.

ROP: How was the experience of producing your new self-titled album with Tarquin Studios? Ten days seems like a very short time to produce a full album!

Honeyblood: We’ll be truthful, it definitely was a very short time. But in the end I feel that the immediacy of the album has been captured because it was recorded fast with a looming deadline. It made us work hard and filled us with energy, which was perfect for capturing the live aspects of the songs.

ROP: Did any style/genre/artist impact the music you create?

Honeyblood: I guess it has been impacted by everything we have ever been into up until this point. For me, the songs are as natural as they come. We made music that was natural to make.

ROP: Have you been able to visit Philadelphia before?

Honeyblood: We have never been to Philadelphia! It’s our first time! It’s actually the only place on our East Coast US tour that we have yet to visit so it’s going to be extra special.

ROP: What is one of your favorite albums by any artist?

Honeyblood: Too difficult to choose. Probably Hatful of Hollow by The Smiths.

ROP: Do you hope to work with another artist in the future?

Honeyblood: I guess every artist would love the opportunity to work with their idols. I would love to record with Kim Deal in her studio. I think that would be a dream come true.

ROP: Where’s your favorite place to grab post performance grub?

Honeyblood: At home, we’d sneak over to Stereo bar in Glasgow. It’s vegan tapas plates. Yummy comfort food.

ROP: Do you notice a different energy/show ambience from crowds in Scotland vs crowds in the US?

Honeyblood: Actually, there are a lot of similarities between Scottish and US crowds that you don’t get anywhere else. They both know how to enjoy themselves!

ROP: Your music video for “Killer Bangs” was interesting and made me think of watching retro home video clips. What was your concept for the shoot?

Honeyblood: We wanted to create a honest interpretation of ourselves just hanging around and being ourselves. We shot the video on location at a old school English pleasure beach pier. It was pretty windy, but a fun day!

ROP: We hope you enjoy your first visit to Philadelphia and we’ll definitely see you at your show at Milkboy on July 29th!
