Brethren May Have “Gone A Little Wrong” with this EP

Brethren‘s 2013 Gone A Little Wrong EP is an inspired effort, featuring solid instrumentals and an obvious fun sound that would sound awesome live. That being said, the inertia and promise of the boisterous twangs of their previous EP’s (November, The Bathroom Walls) falls short with this one. Listening track by track, the lyrics feel disorganized, unfocused, and not really memorable.

Singer Asher Johnson‘s voice has a 90’s alt-whine that should feel right at home with his tracks, but just doesn’t mesh with the acoustic guitar and banjo accompaniment. Brethren needs something that distinguishes them from the pack of “alternative folk band[s],” as Johnson describes their sound. They have the elements and the definite potential on this EP to go far. They need conviction, and a passion that goes beyond the obvious fun they are having with their music, and that will translate into something much bigger and better organized.

Great point, there are so many “alternative folk” bands today that Brethren needs to step it up a bit more. This genre tends to have bands that sound so similar to one another…

It’s so funny, I loved their live show, but you’re totally right about the recording! The sound doesn’t translate as well. Their live show is killer, though.
