Monday Playlist: Going Solo

Sometimes a musician feels the need to put out a solo record. It happens for all kinds of reasons. It can be a sign that there’s some inner turmoil amongst the band. Perhaps the artist just wants to tap into something more individualistic. Two decent albums have come out this year from ex-Walkmen members following the disbanding of the group; Hamilton Leithauser‘s Black Hours and Peter Matthew Bauer‘s aptly titled Liberation!. Hamilton will be at the Electric Factory on September 27th and Mr. Bauer will be performing at Union Transfer with Delta Spirit October 4th so start marking up your calendars.

There have been a number of great solo projects in the past couple years so it isn’t necessarily a bad thing when it happens. Philly certainly knows a thing or two about independence. Here’s a playlist of tunes where artists are doing their solo thing.

1. Hamilton Leithauser – Alexandra

2. Peter Matthew Bauer – Philadelphia Raga

3. Jenny Lewis – She’s Not Me

4. Jim James – A New Life

5. Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks – Lariat

6. Damon Albarn – Mr. Tembo

7. Thurston Moore – Benediction

8. La Roux – Uptight Downtown

9. Neko Case – Night Still Comes

10. Justin Timberlake – That Girl
