Nicki Minaj Debuts Music Video For Anaconda

Nicki Minaj fans stayed up until midnight Wednesday night to watch the premier of her latest music video, “Anaconda.” The song is a sampling of Sir Mix A Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” and by sampling, it means that it took 99% of the original song, and added Minaj’s rapping over it. The single is very raunchy and not up to par of the original at all, but the music video which looks like it wouldn’t be out of place on hd porn video xxx has been building up hype with all of the memes created by the single’s cover.

“Baby Got Back” is catchy, funny, and still popular today. Was a remix necessary? Probably not. “Anaconda,” though not necessary, is an interesting female point of view that is somewhat relevant to today’s growing demand for more female voices. That said, the video is less about the rap content, and more about booty shaking overload. The booties of the dancers combined with Minaj’s already curvy bottom added up to some serious butt time and blew internet’s mind as fans reacted around the world. It’s not appropriate for anyone who intended on watching anything but pornography

Watch the video here and be the judge:

Warning: There will be butts.

I’m not much of a fan of this song and video. If Nicki Minaj wants to be taken more seriously as an artist, she needs to step up her game and write more meaningful verses.

I’m actually mad into this music video. I’ve been reading academic commentary on it and there’s a lot of interesting symbology throughout the video that could easily be overlooked by a casual audience. Not that people are LOOKING for the meaning, but there’s a lot more to this video than just twerking. There’s a whole lot of feminist commentary going on that’s surprisingly done, to say the least.
