Electric Who? Revives an Old School Sound

It’s refreshing to see a band of college-age students revive elements of jazz and blues into its music. Electric Who?, a band consisting of Temple students and Philadelphian residents, sounds like a throwback to jazz’s Golden Age with a modern twist. Electric Who? includes Jeremy on saxophone, Chris on trumpets, Matt on drums, Peter on guitar, Tim on bass, and Colby on vocals (the members go by first names only). Colby, the only female in the group, sings an impressive high range that is slightly reminiscent of Billie Holiday in an effortless and casual manner.

Electric Who? have been playing the local Temple-area circuit (and recently performed at the Grape Room in Manayunk) to promote its EP Caught in the Wind. The EP contains four original tracks and a killer cover of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Highlights include the eclectic “Sunken Sinking,” which showcases Colby’s gorgeous vocals, and switches gears midway into a funkier instrumental interlude. Title track “Caught in the Wind” transports the listener to a balmy day sipping marmalade on a porch. Overall, the EP packs a lot of energy into a small package.
