Monday Playlist: Born to Run

Let’s start with a much needed disclaimer: I was not born to run. Philadelphia on the other hand, appears to be turning into a running city. If you didn’t catch the first annual Philly 10k this past Saturday, then you might want to put it on your calendar for next year, along with the usual Philadelphia race suspects like the Broad Street Run, Philadelphia Half-Marathon and full Marathon.

There’s still time to register for some fall running events in the Philadelphia area including, the 3rd Annual Boxers’ Trail 5k next Saturday, September 13th along East Fairmont Park, the Rock n’ Roll 5k and half marathon happening later this month on September 20th and 21st, and the XPN 5K Run for Musicians on Call at Penn Park on October 5th.

As we mentioned in an earlier post, the Rock n’ Roll marathon rocks as advertised and is a unique experience. And don’t forget, classic hippie rockers Rusted Root will be playing the finish line! The Boxers’ Trail is a 3.8-mile trail in East Fairmount Park that derives its name from its original use as a training ground to generations of Philadelphia boxers, including world champion boxer Joe Frazier. When Muhammad Ali wanted to challenge Joe Frazier, he came to the Boxers’ Trail because he knew he could find Frazier there. Even today, young boxers still jog along the trail.

The XPN 5K RUN commemorates the 10th Anniversary of Musicians On Call, with all proceeds benefiting the program. You get to run through a music-filled course through beautiful Penn Park at the University of Pennsylvania. Musicians On Call has delivered the healing power of music to more than 50,000 patients and their families in the Delaware Valley since 2004. Volunteer musicians from the program will perform along the course on race day and during the Packet Pick-Up on Friday, October 3 from 1-7pm at World Cafe Live. Learn more about the program it benefits here and sign up here.

I’m gonna need you to add Maniac by Michael Sembello to this list. No Run Playlist is complete without it!
