Monday Playlist: The Iggles

The Philadelphia Eagles start their season this Sunday and it cannot come soon enough. They hope to build on their surprisingly successful season last year with new coach Chip Kelly and unlikely phenom Nick Foles. The Eagles certainly shook things up with their hurry-up offense seemingly scoring at will. They have their work cut out for them this year with a difficult schedule and teams gunning for them as they are now the favorite to win the division.

Chip Kelly shares something in common with Ricky Bobby. He wants to go fast. Whether it’s his innovative offense, turning a 4-12 team into a playoff bound team, or making team personnel changes evidenced with the release of DeSean Jackson, he’s going to move fast and it’s going to be exciting. It’s hard not to love this team. Lesean McCoy has proven himself to be an elite running back and earned the respect of the entire league. With Jeremy Maclin returning from injury and Darren Sproles being picked up in the off-season there is no shortage of offensive weapons. The Birds’ defense, anchored by Trent Cole and DeMeco Ryans, quietly put together an excellent season in their own right.

One thing that is lesser known about the Eagles is their connection to music. Another innovation of Chip Kelly’s was the installment of an up-tempo playlist being played from a concert quality sound-system during team practices. This was previously unheard of in the NFL but Kelly added music for a number of reasons and not just for entertainment purposes. The science behind his music-fueled practices is to increase energy and efficiency while simulating the chaotic, fast-paced nature of game day.

Another musical connection can be found with Eagles linebacker and music fanatic Connor Barwin. Connor Barwin has been spotted catching shows at The First Unitarian Church and Union Transfer. He took his music appreciation up a level this summer by hosting a benefit concert to revitalize Ralph Brooks park in Point Breeze. Barwin, with the help of Sean Agnew of R5 Productions, got Philly locals Kurt Vile and The Districts to play the benefit for free. Hopefully, it brings some good karma back to the Eagles this season. Here’s a playlist to get us psyched for the season.

1. The Eagles – Life In The Fast Lane

2. Eagulls – Possessed

3. Kurt Vile – KV Crimes

Come on now, “Gonna Fly Now” should be on this list.

Also, I sincerely hope there is a similar list to commemorate the start of the Philadelphia 76ers season in late October.

That is a notable omission. I can assure you there will be a 76ers playlist.
