Why Aren’t You Listening to: Strand of Oaks

Why you should be listening: it’s the band driven by Philadelphia-based Timothy Showalter, who has been to hell and back over the past decade, and we all know that pain and struggle can lead to some great art, which is exactly what has happened with his latest album HEAL, released by record label Dead Oceans on June 24. Easily one of the best albums to come out this year, HEAL covers a lot of ground with a rocking single “Goshen ’97,” tender ballads, and an awesome tribute to Jason Molina and tip of the hat to Neil Young with “JM.” This album has it all; radio-worthy guitar riffs, the most rocking use of synthesizers I’ve ever heard, and Showalter’s impressive vocal range. It’s guaranteed not to bore.

Sounds like: if someone got to do a Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure with Black Sabbath, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Joshua Tree-U2 (not iPhone U2), all the while making it his own.

Listen to: HEAL, which I’ve conveniently provided via Spotify below so all you have to do is plug in. After you enjoy that, which you surely will, checkout the cool Damien Jurado cover just below it that really showcases Showalter’s awesome voice. You just missed two soldout shows at Boot & Saddle, but you can catch them playing at Union Transfer December 3 so be sure to grab your tickets here.
