Charli XCX’s Sucker Is Delicious And Here’s Why

Charli XCX‘s third studio album Sucker is young and edgy. She made a big break this year with collaborations with Iggy Azalea and her own single “Boom Clap” written for The Fault in Our Stars. “Sucker” starts off with a big “F*** you” and sets the scene for a riot and an over the top album. “Break the Rules” follows suit in a school girl rebellion. It was released as a single and has a fun bridge with a punkish melody that plays into her rock side.

The throwback sound can be heard in “London Queen,” which sounds like early 90’s pop with retro keys. The chorus of backup shouts are carefree and youthful. “Breaking Up” is a sassy breakup song that makes it easy to get over a jerk. The call and response throughout the song gives more attitude as Charli responds.

Hit single “Boom Clap” is a love song that claimed Charli’s place in pop music this year. Aside from being super catchy, it’s combination of the slow verse and repetitive chorus makes it impossible to not catch her diction. Her voice speaks clear into the high range against the reverb, cutting through like lazer in fog.

If you ever need confidence, “Body of My Own” will give it to you. It’s sexy, self-sufficient, and rock and roll. The attitude is carried with loud guitar riffs and singing that is half-shouting. One of the writers of “Hanging Around” is Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. The drumbeats and the raw guitar sound definitely resonate as Weezer-esque. This collaboration is great and puts her at the forefront of recent rock.

Sucker gets better every listen. The British rock star shows promising success with her climbing popularity and frequent appearances. Charli XCX will only get bigger and better with her keen ear for the balance of modern and throwback sound.

Charli XCX seems like an authentic pop star who doesn’t yield to the mainstream media PR machine, which is refreshing.
