Monday Playlist: Songs I Love

As we start the week leading up to Valentine’s Day I thought I’d serve up an l-word themed playlist without being too sentimental (at least I’ll try not to be). It will serve as a love letter to some of the songs that I’ve fallen in love with over the past couple years. Some of the songs are well-known, some are obscure, some are old and some are new, but all have been listened to countless times.

I’ll kick things off with a new one from Father John Misty‘s forthcoming album I Love You, Honeybear. A true departure from the usually debaucherous and comical artist, the album is an earnest attempt at a sincere and revealing documentation of his falling in love with now wife, Emma Tillman. I can’t imagine a more difficult undertaking for an artist.

Valentine’s day, you can take it or leave it, but love songs will persist and the sometimes dreaded l-word will continue to inspire many a great song. Here’s a playlist with just a few of mine.

1. Father John Misty – Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)

2. Blake Mills – Hey Lover

3. Mac DeMarco – My Kind of Woman

4. Phosphorescent – Song for Zula

5. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals – The Hardest Part

6. Lord Huron – The Man Who Lives Forever

7. The Alabama Shakes – I Found You

8. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – Home

9. Nick Waterhouse – Raina

10. Sturgill Simpson – The Promise

11. The Donkeys – Shines

12. Damien Jurado – Everything Trying

13. Nikki Lane – Love’s On Fire

14. Dan Mangan – Basket
