Spotlight on the Tri-State Indie Music Awards

This coming Sunday, March 1st, bands, fans, and music industry professionals alike will descend on World Cafe Live for the fourth annual Tri-State Indie Music Awards. For the fourth year in a row, nominees have been chosen from a blank ballot by more than 150 music professionals in all manner of genres, and then voted to a hopeful win by fans and a discerning public over the course of the open voting period.

This year, the polls once again show outstanding diversity and talent by artists across the Tri-State area. From funk, to hip-hop, to electronic and punk music, each category is packed with independent bands that have demonstrated themselves well over the year. Below, Rock on Philly showcases just a few of our favorites in different categories. Can’t wait to find out who wins? Be there when the action happens by snagging one of the limited number of tickets available to the public, and cheer for your favorites in person!

Indie Pop Band of the Year Nominee: Cheerleader
This powerful Philly group has a sunny sound that’s impossible to resist, but they’ll do their best to convince you anyway, as fans at any of their shows can attest. Their full-length LP, The Sunshine of Your Youth comes out May 19–along with their snagging a spot at Firefly Music Festival this year, sure to be a harbinger of the group’s 2015 success.

Indie Hip Hop Artist/Band of the Year Nominee: Kuf Knotz

This Philly/NY artist continually produces new and interesting efforts, and it seems like he has a hand in just about every musical pot. Check out his most recent collaboration with Brian Dale Allen Strouse (of the Lawsuits) and get hooked.

Funk Band of the Year Nominee: Swift Technique

This group of funky Philly players never fails to produce a party, and this past year has seen them do just that in venues from Ardmore Music Hall to World Cafe Live, as well as keeping a busy touring schedule and spending plenty of time in the recording studio preparing new releases. These boys have declared 2015 #yearofthefunk , and they’re definitely the ones to lead the charge.

Indie Rock Band of the Year Nominee: Satellite Hearts

This young trio out of New Hope, PA has been rocking bodies everywhere with their supersonic sound. On top of their regular shows both in Philadelphia and beyond, these rockers have teamed up with vocal powerhouse Ali Wadsworth (a match made in heaven), and released a new single of their own that hints at what great things we can expect from this group in 2015. Bonus points for being one of the performers on stage this year at the awards show!
