Australian pop goddess Betty Who is embarking on a tour with Kiesza and stopping in Philly for a show at the TLA on May 12th. We’ve got our own exclusive interview with Betty Who to get to know her better.

Rock On Philly: What was a big motivator to pursue a musical career?

Betty Who: I had been doing music my whole life so at some point it kind of felt like I had no other option!

ROP: With your start in music with heavy classical influences, do you incorporate that aspect into your music, like counterpoint and harmonies?

BW: I think it definitely is something I think about a lot. I think my goal in writing is to always make pop music and have it be catchy and relatable for everyone, but still keep it really musically interesting.

ROP: What have you learned from touring with superstars like Katy Perry and Kylie Minogue?

BW: I’ve learned that touring never really gets easier no matter how famous you are.  When I first started touring I kind of thought “yeah this is hard and I’m tired all the time…BUT it’ll definitely get easier and better.”  I don’t think that’s the case ever, I think you just get better at it the longer you do it. So that was an important lesson for me for sure.

ROP: Who is currently on your playlist?

BW: Nicki Minaj, Drake, St. Lucia, Joywave, and Little Dragon.

ROP: Loved your performance of Ariana Grande’s “Love Me Harder.” Who were you most excited to see at The Billboard Women in Music?

BW: I mean… Beyonce was there. So… (but also I got to meet Hayley Williams which was THE COOLEST).

ROP: Will this tour with Kiesza be your first time on South Street in Philly? Is there anything you look forward to doing?

BW: I have a couple friends who are born and raised Philly locals so, I’m trying to convince them to come home for the week I’m there so they can take me out and show me around!

ROP: What is your current favorite throwback tune?

BW: “I Just Wanna Love U” by Jay-Z.

ROP: Who is your style icon?

BW: Stevie Nicks
