Behind the Curtain: Where Has Missy Elliott Been?

When Missy Elliott took the Super Bowl Halftime stage by storm in February, she had everybody asking, where has she been all these years? We haven’t heard a good Missy song laid down since 2005 with “Lose Control” playing on every middle and high school dance floor. She’s popped up now and then in Ciara music videos, but that’s about all we’ve seen of Missy in the past ten years. She nailed her set at the Super Bowl, blowing everyone away and reminding us all of why we love her so much.

So what has she been up to all these years? A quick look at her discography shows that Missy’s been producing up a storm as far back as 1993. From Aaliyah to Beyonce to Philadelphia’s own Jazmine Sullivan, there are countless hit songs out in the world that you didn’t know were touched by Missy’s producing magic.

Aaliyah – I Care For You (2001)

Beyoncé – Signs (2003)

Whitney Houston – Things You Say (2002)

Ciara – 1, 2 Step (2004)

Keyshia Cole – Let It Go (2007)

Jennifer Hudson – I’m His Only Woman (2008)

Jazmine Sullivan – Holding You Down (2010)

Monica – Anything (To Find You) (2012)

Missy recorded six albums of her own between 1997 and 2005 and featured in several television shows and movies (remember Honey?), but after that she stuck to producing and writing. It’s clearly been serving her well, but there’s a new album in the works! Pharrell Williams has confirmed that he’s been in the studio with Missy lately, and with two such talented and innovative artists working together, it’s a sure bet that Missy’s next album will be nothing short of unstoppable.
