From the iPod to iTunes: How Apple Has Changed How We Hear Music

When someone mentions the iTunes store and the iPod, many people already know what those two things are, have at least some knowledge of them and the company that produced them (looking at you, Apple). Back in the early 2000s, (specifically before April 28th, 2003) however, no one had any clue of what these were and how much of an impact they would have on how we listen to music.

Twelve years ago today, Apple launched the iTunes store and released their third generation iPod that held 7,500 songs, according to the Apple website. Since then, the way we listen to music has changed drastically from the olden days where people bragged about their physical CD collections, and portable CD players (remember Walkmans?) were a staple to people who wanted to listen to music on the go.

When iTunes launched, it had 200,000 songs, all at 99 cents each. Since then, the selection of songs and albums has grown past millions (maybe even billions), making it easy for people to find all kinds of music to purchase and download to their iPods, in addition to now being able to sync music to other Apple devices as well.

Now, with platforms such as Spotify, Pandora Radio, and many others, music can now be heard much more easily with internet connection. I can admit that I still purchase CDs and I’m probably not the only one. But music, in its current state, is so much more accessible than it was before 2003 and even before the iPod launched. Although there are blatant pros and cons to music now being so accessible, what matters is that it’s out there for millions of people to enjoy.
