The ladies of Little May hail from Australia and are stopping by Philadelphia on June 8th at Johnny Brenda’s. Little May is composed of Liz Drummond, Hannah Field, and Annie Hamilton. They make music that is intriguing while maintaining a casual vibe. We got a chance to put some questions to guitarist Liz Drummond about their music.

Rock on Philly: Hello, thanks for taking the time to do a little interview with Rock On Philly.
Liz Drummond: Thanks for having me!

ROP: First off, how did three talented ladies come together?

LD: Hannah and I were best friends in high school. We shared a lot of similar music tastes and influences, and we started writing together when we were about 18. I was friends with Annie at a previous school, and she started playing with us in 2011. We started playing a lot of pub and eventually club gigs, all that sort of stuff.

ROP: Which musicians/what influenced you to write in this folky rock style?

LD: We all have a lot of different influences. I grew up listening to a lot of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Alice Cooper… whatever my parents listened to. My parents are very into music. My brother was an amazing guitarist which definitely influenced me to start playing. I think I wanted to be like him. I am constantly influenced by new and old music, but I’ll usually always return to Radiohead and Jeff Buckley.

ROP: Are you working on an album with the EP you released?

LD: We are currently in the middle of working on an album. We are really happy with how it’s sounding. It should be out later this year, which we’re so excited to share with the world.

ROP: Which musicians are you excited to possibly run into during your appearance at the Gentlemen of the Road show in New Jersey?
LD: I am really excited to see and hopefully meet the guys from Mumford & Sons. I cannot wait to see Alabama Shakes live. They are so unreal. I’ve never seen The Flaming Lips live either, just on YouTube. And I love Blake Mills…. Basically everyone on the lineup!

ROP: Who are you listening to right now?

LD: Sufjan Stevens, Father John Misty, Blake Mills, The Afghan Whigs, Alberta Cross

ROP: Where’s your favorite place to go for musical inspiration?

LD: There is a beautiful place in Australia in the NSW snowy mountains called Jindabyne. We wrote one of the songs off our album there. We stayed in a house that was overlooking Lake Jindabyne. The lake used to be the old town which is now completely underwater. It’s quite a magical place.

ROP: Thanks, this is all for now. I hope to see you at Johnny Brenda’s when you stop by in Philly!

LD: Thanks so much! We Can’t wait to be in Philly! See you soon x
