Why Aren’t You Listening To: Soft Cat

“Why Aren’t You Listening to” is an irregularly running series at Rock On Philly, spotlighting artists in Philly and beyond that you should be keeping an eye (and ear) out for! The most recent series installment focuses on chamber-folk ensemble Soft Cat.

Why you should be listening: Soft Cat is a Baltimore-based band formed in 2009. Still relatively unknown outside of Maryland, once you find this hidden treasure it’s hard to let go; partly because of the mythic history surrounding its music. Before recording 2015’s All Energy Will Rise, three members lost their D.I.Y. art gallery and living space to a massive fire. The album deals with this tragedy and other difficulties in the members’ lives, but captures it more through the gorgeous arrangements of instruments than lyrics. Dreamy and contemplative, the delicate sounds of Soft Cat will definitely linger with you long after.

Sounds like: Soft Cat’s sound is hard to describe, because it features a rotating cast of members that support mainstay Neil Sanzgiri. The diversity provides Soft Cat with an elusive and varied nature that does not allow for a narrow range of musical styles. Some songs are more Americana folk (“Goldmines”), while others are more spacey and slightly psychedelic (“Old Song”).

Listen to: “Diana,” “Goldmines,” “Somebody,” “Us In The Water” (all found on Soft Cat’s soundcloud).
