Janelle Monáe Takes Our Breath Away at Union Transfer

On Wednesday, August 12, 2015 Janelle Monáe and Wondaland Records kicked off The Eephus Tour, sponsored by Toyota in Philadelphia. The surprising part about the show was that it was an undisclosed location, known only to the dedicated fans who downloaded Monáe’s album and received the free concert’s locale on the date of the event. That undisclosed locale happened to be at Union Transfer, and the cloak-and-dagger mystère certainly did not keep fans from lining up around Spring Garden to see the breathtaking performances by Janelle Monáe, Jidenna, St. Beauty, Deep Cotton, and Roman GianArthur.

I must say- I knew this was going to be a great event, once the DJ opened up, and had the crowd on their toes. With fans still toe-tapping, Janelle and Jidenna’s performance for “Yoga” was very energetic, and had a nice balance of St. Beauty’s good vibes. Jidenna’s voice was outstanding and meshed nicely with his outfit, which was a very dapper suit-and-bowtie situation. Deep Cotton’s energy was so addicting that I wanted to jump on stage with them! And, Roman Gianarthur’s performance was simply the icing on the cake of Wondaland’s outstanding musicians.

If you haven’t heard of Wondaland Records, founded by Janelle Monáe herself, definitely give it a look, because the show that they put on was probably one of the best with more to come on this tour. Check out their website here for admissions to these exclusive, invite-only (free!!) performances.
