Musikfest is upon us! The 31-year-old Bethlehem, PA festival features more than 550 bands this year, with well over 500 of the them playing for free. Beginning tonight, the stages open with an epic set from Duran Duran and continue for 10 days of music culminating in the final night with Alice in Chains. The main stage also features acts as varied as The Flaming Lips, Snoop Dogg, ZZ Top, and the festival’s first comedy headliner, Jerry Seinfeld. For the next week and a half, the Lehigh Valley will be filled with sights and sounds sure to tickle everyone’s fancy.

One of the lesser-known acts, Rolie Polie Guacamole, a self-described “family-friendly rock ‘n’ roll” band who think it’s important to write music for the whole family because “music is universal”, will be playing two free sets on Friday the 14th at FLYLVIA Plaza Tropical. Their sets will be in the afternoon and would be one of many great ways to entertain the whole family at this year’s festival, which also features daily crafts and carnival rides.

Rolie Polie Guacamole is playing their 4th Musikfest. The band loves playing for their fans in Bethlehem, who often carry signs with the names of their songs and sing along at the top of voices. Having family in the area, playing the festival gives them a good excuse to catch up with loved ones while they are in town, as well. When people come out to see RPG, they should expect “highly interactive, upbeat and funny [shows].” In fact, the band says that families will have such a good time dancing and jumping and playing around that afterwards most folks are “ready to take a nap.”

The band has been playing together for nearly a decade and enjoys writing songs about things they love like food, places to visit, activities, and of course, snowball fights. With August temperatures in the Northeast, I wouldn’t expect to have a snowball fight this year at Musikfest, though a snow cone from the concession area may be a good choice.

Although just one of the hundreds of acts you can see at this year’s Musikfest, Rolie Polie Guacamole is releasing a new album in September and can’t wait to share some of their new tunes with the Lehigh Valley. Stop on over and meet Frank and Andrew… and come back to Rock on Philly for more Musikfest coverage!
