Ariana Grande Wants You to “Focus” on Her New Video!

Late Thursday evening, Ariana Grande (also known as Mariah Carey 2.0) surprised her fans with both a new single and music video. “Focus ” is the first track to be released off of the young singer’s third album, Moonlight– a pretty big feat for a twenty-two year old. Although the single has only been released for a day, Grande quickly climbed the iTunes charts landing the #2 spot in between Adele and Justin Bieber.

In the “Focus” music video, Grande is definitely channeling her inner sultry side. Cue close-ups of lips and silhouettes of her body, which continues in brief shots throughout the entire music video. The video is not as creative as it could be, as Grande takes selfies and dances inside of a box that she can only fit in by being on her knees, until about midway through when Grande changes outfits and the choreography picks up. However, the repetition of the chorus, “focus on me” and her camera-ready makeup and choreography bring attention to solely being on Ariana.

With all of the attention with the release of the single, the pop princess has once again created another catchy song, making it difficult to resist the urge to break-out in dance as soon as it plays. Like Grande’s other songs and a signature trademark of hers, “Focus” shows off her unbelievable vocal ability and range while still being inventive by incorporating the trumpet, an instrument not commonly used in the pop world, and including some 90’s hip hop vibes with the repetition in the chorus.

What do you think of the new music video? Agree? Disagree? Did you feel underwhelmed? Let us know in the comments below!

Eh. I’m underwhelmed. And I’d never compare Ariana to Mariah. Ever. Maybe the new Mariah (post Butterfly) but not the old Mariah whose voice is untouchable. Ariana if anything reminds me of Christina Aguilera. Very similar tone and performing style.

It’s a fun song but…for Mariah in her heyday, the “focus” was on her voice.

I agree with Jenn, this video seems like too much of a vanity project and not enough attention on the talent and true emotion. I’m tired of Ariana’s videos including so many closeups of her face doing that pouty expression.
