On Saturday December 5th, the public television series MY MUSIC (presented by TJL Productions) will present Close To You: Remembering The Carpenters, airing on Public Television stations nationwide. The film is a music-filled documentary that traces the Carpenters’ career through the eyes of Richard Carpenter and the group’s friends in the music business, such as Herb Alpert, Burt Bacharach, Petula Clark and Paul Williams.

The Carpenters, composed of brother-and-sister songwriting duo Richard and Karen, became the top American recording act of the 1970s and have sold over 100 million recordings worldwide. They are known for such hits “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” “Top of the World,” “For All We Know,” “Superstar,” and “We’ve Only Just Begun.” Close To You will feature rare performances of some of these songs as well as extensive archival footage that, until now, has never been seen by the public. The film celebrates The Carpenters’ enduring musical legacy, including Karen’s distinctive velvety voice and Richard’s piano playing.

Made available as part of this television event, Carpenters – The Complete Singles is a new 3-CD box set that presents, for the first time in one collection, every A and B-side released in the United States on A&M Records between 1969 and 1989 in the form of their original single version. With 66 tracks in total, the collection will be made exclusively available as a gift for viewers who make a pledge of support to their public television channel.

Additionally, a DVD of the Close To You special will be offered as a public television exclusive, with sixty minutes of extras including complete song performances from the duo, expanded from the documentary. Also included is “The Carpenters at The White House” featurette, shot when President Nixon was in office, and other rare songs and footage, including a stunning rendition of Karen and Richard performing “Ave Maria.”
