Perhaps you know Christina Grimmie from Season 6 of The Voice or perhaps you’ve been following her career since its early days on Youtube. If you don’t know her by now, you should get to know her. This singing, songwriting phenom oozes soul and despite living in Los Angeles currently, is a Philly native who loves Wawa, water ice, and cheesesteaks. We got the chance to chat with her about her new EP, performing with Rachel Platten, and more.

Rock On Philly: You released a new EP in February. Tell us about it!
Christina Grimmie: It’s a personal EP. I got to produce as well as write a lot of it my own. Lots of personal experience intertwined with some vicarious writing.

ROP: Very cool. What was the songwriting process like? Did you collaborate with anyone on it?
CG: A lot of the songs I had written  in my laptop and I thought they maybe wouldn’t be released. But they meant a lot to me and I wanted to share them with all my fans that haven’t heard anything that I’ve solely written. Cool to finally release the chill piano stuff that I do in my free time.

ROP:  If you could write a song with any artist out there right now, who would it be and why?
CG: I would absolutely love to collaborate with Ed Sheeran or maybe even do a Skrillex remix.

ROP:  Do you prefer being in the studio or touring?
CG: Touring for sure- getting to meet the fans that come out is everything. Not to mention live singing is one of the main reasons I do what I do. Singing is my life and breath.

ROP: So I hear you’re living in LA now. Any fun celebrity encounters yet?
CG: Pretty sure I saw Raven Symone in a sushi place before! I saw Tori Spelling in Topanga Mall as well and waved to her, too!

ROP: What is something that surprises people about you?
CG: Despite being goofy and pretty outgoing with fans, I kick back mostly by myself. I love being by myself. I usually have headphones on all the time just listening to music as well.

ROP: You’re from the Philly area. What do you miss most?
CG: I miss the cheesesteaks, the Italian food, Wawa, my family. So much.

ROP: Where is your favorite place to eat in the Philly area when you’re visiting?
CG: Give me anything Italian!!! PLEASE.

ROP: Do people in your hometown treat you differently now that you have such a big following?
CG: A little bit here and there for sure; not my family or any of my close friends. But it’s a cool change.

ROP: What is the most memorable fan encounter you’ve had?
CG: There’s not one in particular, to be honest. I’d say overall it’s the ones that bring me adorable letters, cards or even presents- they know me so well. They literally get me Zelda things or Death Note things (two of fave things on this planet) and they go so out of their way to create things for me. It’s so incredible to see people who care that much.

ROP: You can only pick one: Philly pretzel, Philly cheesesteak, or Water Ice?
CG: DON’T ASK ME SUCH A TOUGH QUESTION I CAN’T EVEN CHOOSE!!! (sighs) Fine.If it’s GOTTA be one, I’ll go with the cheesesteak!

ROP: (laughs)  On a scale of 1-10, how much do you love Wawa?
CG: MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF, IF I’M BEING REAL RIGHT NOW……I’ll give Wawa a solid 50 out of 10.

ROP:  What was it like performing with Rachel and Eric at the Trocadero?
CG: AMAZING. Two of the best people to tour with. Rachel is the sweetest and Eric is the suavest. (laughs)
