A Silent Film is coming to Johnny Brenda’s on Monday, August 2nd, and they want YOU to join them! If you haven’t already heard of the Brits, their sound is an experimental yet emotive experience. We were lucky enough to chat up Robert Stevenson (vocals/piano) and Spencer Walker (drums) ahead of next Tuesday’s show, who are super excited to share their new, old and “new-new” music with you.

Rock On Philly: What can we expect from next week’s show?

A Silent Film: We’re really excited for a nice, intimate show. Trying out some new songs, songs that haven’t been heard before and a lot of what is going to be on the new album is what the people want…We have played a lot big rooms in Philly, but never an intimate show, so we’re really looking forward to it.

ROP: What sort of things are you testing out?

ASF: New-new songs– We like to test out song and sound ideas and see how the fans respond to them. See what works and what doesn’t. Like, if some people are cheering and going crazy for one song, but at the bar for the other–we know it doesn’t work!

ROP: So, let’s get this straight. We’re getting older songs from your last albums, your new EP, and new-new songs?!

ASF: Yes! A lot of what happens at our New York and Philly shows is what is going to determine the course of our new album so you can’t miss it!

What happens at this show is how people interpret the new sounds; introduce songs and sounds that work, and those that don’t. That’s why we love Philly, and our New York shows. You guys tell it how it is. You guys don’t hold back! When we first play a song, we really want to see the connection. So, if we play something, and people are off at the bar, we know it doesn’t work!

ROP: You know, Philly can be your biggest critics but your greatest lovers.

ASF: And that’s why we love Philly! We love that our Philly and New York shows are probably the best we’ve seen – we always have great feedback and love from the fans.

ROP: Since you’ve played Philly in the past, what do you look forward to when you come, just for fun?

SF: Well, we love a good cheesesteak…and cheesecake. We can also like a great green curry.

ROP: So, what’s the perfect Philly meal?

ASF: Go out on death row with cheesesteak and cheesecake. Cheesecake in the shape of the Liberty Bell. It would the perfect last meal.

ROP: That took a dark turn! Anyway, I was just listening to your cover of “I Ran (So Far Away)” by A Flock of Seagulls, and it just blew me away. What goes into making a great cover song?

ASF: Wow, thank you! Don’t know how to put this, but it’s more you connect to a certain aspect of a lyric. I thought of a different side of that song that I hadn’t heard before.

You know that means, don’t you? Get ready to get up close and personal with A Silent Film on August 2nd at Johnny Brenda’s! And don’t forget to enter our giveaway to win tickets to the show here.
