Pre Show Chat With Hey Mercedes

Hey Mercedes is back after a decade to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their first full length record Everynight Fire Works. Tomorrow they’ll be at The Foundry and The Fillmore with The World Is A Beautiful Place And I’m No Longer Afraid To Die, Prawn, and JANK. We were able to sit down with Hey Mercedes for a pre show chat!

Rock On Philly: What made you guys decide to start playing music again after being gone for about a decade?

Damon Atkinson: It was because 2016 is the 15th anniversary of our first full length record Everynight Fire Works and we thought it would be a good idea to have that record remastered and re-released with some extra songs. And since we were planning on doing all that, we thought it would be a lot of fun if we played some shows to coincide with this re-release.

ROP: What has it been like playing live shows once more together?

DA: It’s been absolutely incredible. We’re all having so much fun being back up on stage playing these songs for some very excited fans who are stoked to hear all of these songs live again, or for some, hearing these songs live for the first time. We’ve met a bunch of people who didn’t get into Hey Mercedes until after we had broken up, so they are really happy we’re playing shows again.

ROP: Do you plan on making any new music?

DA: There’s no plan for that right now, but never say never.

ROP: How do you feel about the new wave of emo and pop punk?

DA: Honestly, I don’t think about it much. I know there are some really talented people out there who are having a blast playing music within this genre and a lot of fans who are supporting it, so I wish everyone all the best. We get asked often if we ever feel slighted because certain bands doing well now or within the last few years may have been influenced by bands like Hey Mercedes or Braid, but that’s not the case with us. If we played any role, big or small, in influencing any bands, that’s just a huge compliment for us.

ROP: Does it differ from when you were first playing music?

DA: Again, I honestly don’t think about it much, so same answer as above.
