Ja Rule & Ashanti Give Their All at Electric Factory

As I entered the Electric Factory to see a concert boasting Ja Rule and Ashanti as the headliners, I couldn’t help but feel a bit nostalgic. It felt like only yesterday I was 11 years old, full of prepubescent awkwardness, rocking flare leg jeans and blasting “Always on Time” on my first generation iPod. Finally seeing the 2000s power duo perform in the flesh seemed like a dream come true for the mostly 21 and up audience that night. Despite neither artist having a huge hit since 2004, Ja Rule and Ashanti proved that good things never die with a sold out show last Friday.

Although the duo was a bit “fashionably late” (about 35 minutes behind schedule) and the crowd was becoming increasingly impatient, all that changed the moment J & A hit the stage. The duo proved that no amount of years could tear them apart, as they commanded the stage and played off of each other for classics like “Mesmerize”, “Always on Time” & “What’s Luv”. In under two hours, Ja Rule and Ashanti were able to squeeze in both new and old solo work, short films, on-stage acting, dancing, no less than three wardrobe changes (each!) and even some up close and personal time with fans in the photo pit. The two proved that even if they’re not “Always on Time”, they’ll always give us their all.
