Marian Hill and Opia Get DOWN at TLA

Marian Hill made a righteous homecoming yesterday. The duo, who has been slaying and taking names with their R&B-infused-trip-pop all over the world, came home to Philadelphia to a packed house at the Theater of Living Arts.

Up first was another dynamic duo, New Haven, CT’s Opia. Energetic, upbeat and, with aptly self-described “tunes you can make out to,” the pair won over the then-burgeoning crowd into raucous applause by the end of the set. Just one of the stand-out songs of the night that will get you “talkin’ in your sleep” was “Faded,” off of their upcoming, untitled EP.

And lastly, but certainly not at all the least, was our hometown heroes Marian Hill. After what seemed to be an eternity of staring at white canvas cubes under blue stage lighting, their use became apparent as the silhouettes of Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol appeared as the stage lights came on to huge cheers from the audience. From there, it was lights, music, action as the duo, joined by saxophonist/guitarist/superman Steve Davit, rocked the house with their slick tunes, with the set beginning and ending with “Down”. The band oscillated seamlessly between songs from Act One and Sway, showing just how much their musicianship and talent have grown since it all began. One of many highlights was a soft, tender cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

Since seeing them at a few steamy outdoor festivals, Gongol and Lloyd’s onstage musical chemistry seems to have intensified, with both owning their individual space on stage as sound and genuine love pours outward to the crowd. Seeing them live again keeps reminds me of what great musicians they are and how great they work in harmony and for the love of the crowd. We can’t wait to get DOWN for more from them!
