House of Vans Rolls Through Philly

Located in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood sits an unassuming warehouse, but encapsulated inside is the spirit of skate and Do-It-Yourself (DIY) culture. Such a venture couldn’t belong to anyone else but Vans.

House of Vans has been hosting pop-up shops all over the world to inspire, teach, and spread creativity. Over the weekend, Philadelphia was lucky enough to host House of Vans at a similar warehouse just off the Spring Garden Market-Frankford line stop. Of course in true Philly fashion, the weekend was filled with chaotic skate contests, overflowing drink tokens, and people throwing shoes onstage for Tierra Whack to sign during her performance.

House of Vans Philly opened their doors on Thursday to a full house (RSVP tickets sold out weeks in advance.) This may be partially due to Philly heavy-hitters headlining the performances for the day —  Orion Sun, Hop Along and Tierra Whack.  All three acts were a perfect addition to the event, as they have perfectly captured the essence of Philly DIY in respective scenes. The event also hosted acts Phantogram,Y La Bamba and hosted a special Philly Locals showcase which included Yowler, Arch of Love, Buddie and Cheeky.

The experience culminated through a series of music, workshops, art demos, local vendors, and, of course, lots of skateboarding.

The event hosted a series of workshops ran by Todd Francis, Jaqueline Quinn, Phil Jackson, Frances Quinlan, BJ Betts, Tim Gough, Jeffrey Wright, Matt Wohlab, and Lauren Cat West. Zine making, block printing, and mini-guitar lessons were some of the sessions that attendees had the opportunity to experience first-hand.

Philly is a city known for it’s murals all over the city so it seemed pretty fitting that the event featured a live mural painting by Justine Kelley, Kees Holterman, Keith Greiman, Kendra Dandy, Lauren Cat West, Matt Wohlrab, TJ McGlade, and Zo Perron.
